Institutional data for the UK magazine industry
Today the UK magazine industry is worth a massive £8 billion, even though it has been steadily declining since 2001 dues to the rise of internet technology and the information so readily available. The number of current main branded music magazines being circulated stands at 62,048,488, which happens to be 13.31 million fewer than in 2009. However fortunately for UK publishers, there has been a 1.3% decrease in internet magazine sales year on year. Although this still makes producing a magazine and aiming it at a niche market a risky and quite challenging task. This means that any marketing, and other competitions need to observed very carefully and the new magazine would have to have something different which appeals to its target audience. But astonishingly, 2,600 magazines in the UK are purchased every minute of every day, resulting in the spend of £2.6 billion each year.
Institutional data ‘Overview of Industry’
IPC Media is the leading magazine publishers in the UK. They produce over 85 media brands, and their print brands alone reach nearly two thirds of UK women and 44% of UK men, which is close to 27 million UK adults. Their online brands collectively reach 20 million users every month. ICP truly has something for everyone, and categorise their audiences into three groups. These being men, mass market women and upmarket women. Their men’s portfolio, aka ‘IPC Inspire’, includes leisure magazines such as ‘Country Life’, ‘Horse & Hound’, Rugby World’ and ‘Decanter’ and lifestyle magazines such as ‘Nuts’, ‘Mousebreaker’ and ‘NME’. Their Mass market Women’s division, aka ‘IPC Connect’, includes popular weekly magazines such as ‘Look’, ‘Now’, ‘Chat’ and ‘Woman’, and also the TV entertainment magazines including the likes of ‘What’s on TV’, ‘TVTimes’ and ‘TV & Satellite Week’. And in this group they also have the online ‘goodtoknow’ network. Their upmarket women’s division, aka ‘IPC Southbank’, is made up of big names such as ‘Marie Claire’, ‘Woman&Home’, ‘Ideal Home’ and ‘InStyle’. Emap was the second largest magazine publisher in the UK until the company split up and sold off in December. Emap originated in 1947, and went on to publish major magazine brands such as ‘Q’, ‘FHM’, ‘Zoo’, ‘Heat’ and ‘Grazia’. There are also hundreds of other minor publishers such as BBC magazines, Essential publishing and Conde Nast publications to name a few.
